Literacy Champion - National Year of Reading
National Literacy Trust
An exciting opportunity to be part of a nationwide campaign for 2026 - The National Year of Reading
Fewer people are reading for fun these days, especially boys, teenagers and families on low incomes. But reading for pleasure has been shown to help people do better in school, work and life. In 2026, the UK will launch the National Year of Reading, a major project with the Department for Education, aimed at bringing back a love of reading across the country. We are looking for volunteers in Bridgwater, Taunton and Yeovil to help bring the National Year of Reading 2026 to life in their local community. We are looking for people who: • Love the idea of encouraging others to read for fun • Know a group of people who might join in – such as friends, neighbours, local groups, sports teams, workmates or WhatsApp groups • Can help organise activities for their group • Can keep the Project Officer updated on plans, events and feedback We will support you by offering: • A starter training session • A helpful handbook full of ideas, resources and guidance • A monthly newsletter with news, tips and inspiration • Access to our Volunteer Portal to track and celebrate what you do • Travel costs covered (as agreed with the NLT contact) • Chances to connect with other volunteers in your area • Regular check-ins and ongoing support There is no set way for you and your group to get involved. You could run reading groups, storytelling sessions, book swaps, small community libraries, family reading events, work with schools, libraries or community organisations to spread a love of reading, or something else that inspires you. This is a flexible role where you can make a real difference in your community, using creativity and teamwork to help people of all ages enjoy reading in a fun and positive way. -
