Junction 21 Mentoring Project

Detailed Description

What do mentors do? They support a young person for at least 12 months They listen and offer support They meet the young person regularly They work with the young person to identify goals which can improve their lives They provide support to achieve the identified goals Mentors reinforce the positive aspects of the young person’s life Why do young people want a mentor? They are having a hard time at school They are no longer living at home They have significant difficulties at home Try something new (sport etc) Meet new challenges They want someone to listen to them Support to achieve new goals Help them stay out of trouble Help build confidence and reduce vulnerability Support to understand and manage emotions They need someone who is consistent in their life With the help of the Mentoring Coordinator a plan is made with the Mentor and young person to decide goals and agree how these can be achieved with mentors support. They goals are reviewed regularly and feedback is given. Before the end an activity is planned to celebrate what has been achieved.

Why these skills are required

The ability to work in a confidential manner The ability to empathise with young people Active listener Restrictions: - If applicant has a history of substance misuse they must demonstrate a minimum of 5 years of abstinence. - If applicant has any criminal conviction they must be willing to disclose full details to staff. All convictions also need to be spent with a minimum of 5 years since last offence

What is in it for you

The training is divided into 8 units each lasting three hours. Time Commitment

Training 24hrs (8 x 3hr sessions) Once trained commitment is a couple of hours per week to meet mentee
